LESSON 7 BY FAITH ALONE

Faith is not feeling but living by the Word of God. It is to take God at His word and follow it. To believe in Christ merely as the Savior of the world can never bring healing to the soul. The faith that brings salvation is not a mere intellectual assent to the truth of the gospel. True faith is to accept Christ as your personal Savior.

Many hold faith as an opinion or simply a profession, however saving faith is a transaction, in which those who receive Christ join themselves in covenant relation with God. A living faith means a life of trust and surrender to Christ. We are first drawn by His love and then strengthen by His grace we then live our life for God.

Faith is, “The assent of the mind to the truth of divine revelation on the authority of God’s testimony. An entire trust or confidence in God’s character and declaration, and in the character and doctrines of Christ, with an unreserved surrender of the will to His guidance, and dependence on His merits for salvation.” (Noah Webster op cit.)

Man is forgiven or justified by faith:

Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. Romans 3:28

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 5:1

But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, the just shall live by faith. Galatians 3:11

The justified live by faith:

For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. Romans 1:17

For we walk by faith [we regulate our lives and conduct ourselves by our conviction or belief respecting man’s relationship to God and divine things, with trust and holy fervor; thus we walk] not by sight or appearance. 2 Corinthians 5:7 AMP

Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. Hebrews 10:38

Faith comes from the word of God (Romans 10:17), and we are to live according to every word of God. (See Matthew 4:4.) Therefore, before doing anything we should see what God has said about it—and then do as He has said. That is, living by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God; it is truly living by faith. One can eat by faith by eating the food God has specified; dress by faith by wearing such attire as God has said becomes His children; marry by faith by marrying “only in the Lord” as He has said.

Our business, our recreation and leisure time, our relationships with others can all be pursued by a life of faith. This simply means we are to conduct all the affairs of our life according to the will and Word of God. Every act of life should be based upon the instruction God has given. We are to work and pray, and then believe that God will remove every mountain of difficulty that is in the way and make it possible for us to do all that He has specified.

Purity of heart by faith:

And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Acts 15:9

Heart—The thoughts or feelings, the mind.

Sanctified by faith:

To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. Acts 26:18

Sanctified—Make holy, consecrate, morally blameless.

Righteousness comes by faith in Christ:

Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference. Romans 3:22

And that I may [actually] be found and known as in Him, not having any [self-achieved] righteousness that can be called my own, based on my obedience to the Law’s demands (ritualistic uprightness and supposed right standing with God thus acquired), but possessing that [genuine righteousness] which comes through faith in Christ (the Anointed One), the [truly] right standing with God, which comes from God by [saving] faith. Philippians 3:9 AMP

Righteousness—Purity of heart and life; conformity of heart and life to the divine law. It includes justice, honesty and virtue.

Holy Spirit received by faith:

That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Galatians 3:14

We become children of God by faith:

For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:26

But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the authority (power, privilege, right) to become the children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name. John 1:12 AMP

By faith we patiently wait for the fulfillment of righteousness in us:

For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. Galatians 5:5

For we, [not relying on the Law but] through the [Holy] Spirit’s [help], by faith anticipate and wait for the blessing and good for which our righteousness and right standing with God [our conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action, causes us] to hope. Galatians 5:5 AMP

The hope we wait for:

Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. 2 Peter 3:13, 14 (See also 1 John 3:2, 3.)

Kept by God through faith:

Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Peter 1:5

Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy. Jude 24

The devil overcome by faith:

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. Ephesians 6:11, 16

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. 1 Peter 5:8, 9

Creation believed by faith:

Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Hebrews 11:3

Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. Colossians 1:13–17

Redemption in Christ is by faith and the surety of salvation is linked to the power of Christ as Creator. Therefore as we believe in divine creation by faith, creation becomes to us the evidence of the reality of salvation. Further, knowing God’s saving grace is the evidence that the worlds were created by the word of God. For both creation and redemption comes by the power of God.

By faith Christ dwells in us:

That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Ephesians 3:17–19 (See also Ephesians 2:20–22; John 14:21, 23; Galatians 2:20.)

Obedience comes by faith:

Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law. Romans 3:31

For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 1 John 5:4

By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. Hebrews 11:4

By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. Hebrews 11:7

[Prompted] by faith Noah, being forewarned by God concerning events of which as yet there was no visible sign, took heed and diligently and reverently constructed and prepared an ark for the deliverance of his own family. By this [his faith which relied on God] he passed judgment and sentence on the world's unbelief and became an heir and possessor of righteousness (that relation of being right into which God puts the person who has faith). Hebrews 11:7 AMP

By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise. Hebrews 11:8, 9

By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son. Hebrews 11:17

By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward. By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible. Hebrews 11:24–27

Faith demonstrated by works:

Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. James 2:17, 18, 21, 22, 24
