LESSON 25 TRUST IN THE LORD

Trust—Flee for protection; to confide in; be confident or sure. “Confidence; a reliance or resting of the mind on the integrity, veracity, justice, friendship or sound principle of another person. To place confidence in; to rely on.” (Noah Webster op cit.)

Woe to her that is filthy and polluted, to the oppressing city! She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the LORD; she drew not near to her God. Zephaniah 3:1, 2

Trust in God is a protection or shield:

And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul: And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence. I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. 2 Samuel 22:1–4

As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him. For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God? 2 Samuel 22:31, 32

Buckler—Shield, figuratively a protector

My soul, wait only upon God and silently submit to Him; for my hope and expectation are from Him. He only is my Rock and my Salvation; he is my Defense and my Fortress, I shall not be moved. With God rests my salvation and my glory; He is my Rock of unyielding strength and impenetrable hardness, and my refuge is in God! Trust in, lean on, rely on, and have confidence in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts before Him. God is a refuge for us (a fortress and a high tower). Psalm 62:5–8 AMP

Blessed are those who trust:

O LORD of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee. Psalm 84:12

O Lord of hosts, blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) is the man who trusts in You [leaning and believing on You, committing all and confidently looking to You, and that without fear or misgiving.] Psalm 84:12 AMP

O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. Psalm 34:8

Trust in God centers in His word:

He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he. Proverbs 16:20

He who deals wisely and heeds [God’s] word and counsel shall find good, and whoever leans on, trusts in, and is confident in the Lord—happy, blessed, and fortunate is he. Proverbs 16:20 AMP

Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Proverbs 30:5

Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness. Let thy mercies come also unto me, O LORD, even thy salvation, according to thy word. So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word. Psalm 119:40–42

Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge. For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips. That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee. Proverbs 22:17–19

Listen (consent and submit) to the words of the wise, and apply your mind to my knowledge; For it will be pleasant if you keep them in your mind [believing them]; your lips will be accustomed to [confessing] them. So that your trust (belief, reliance, support, and confidence) may be in the Lord, I have made known these things to you today, even to you. Proverbs 22:17–19 AMP

Peace comes with trust:

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Isaiah 26:3

You will guard him and keep him in perfect and constant peace whose mind [both its inclination and its character] is stayed on You, because he commits himself to You, leans on You, and hopes confidently in You. Isaiah 26:3 AMP

It is in trustng God that we gain strength for the battles of life. Through trusting God we will learn how to lay aside so much or our toil and worry and then we are  able to speak and sing to the praise of God. It is only as we learn this lesson of trust that we can be possessors of His peace and rest.

Trust in God’s mercy and loving-kindness:

But I have trusted, leaned on, and been confident in your mercy and loving-kindness; my heart shall rejoice and be in high spirits in Your salvation. Psalm 13:5 AMP

God shall redeem those that trust in Him:

The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate. Psalm 34:22

Desolate—To be guilty by implication, to be punished or perish.

Trust in God’s salvation:

Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. Isaiah 12:2

Better to trust in God than in mankind:

The good man is perished out of the earth: and there is none upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt every man his brother with a net. Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom. For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own house. Therefore I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me. Micah 7:2, 5–7

It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes. Psalm 118:8–9

In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness. Psalm 31:1

In the LORD put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain? Psalm 11:1

Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God: Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever. Psalm 146:3–6

The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe. Proverbs 29:25

God guides those who trust in Him:

Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee. Psalm 143:8

Cause me to hear—To hear intelligently (often with implication of intelligence, obedience etc,) cause to tell.

Cause me to know—To know (ascertain by seeing).

Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, for on you do I lean and in You do I trust. Cause me to know the way wherein I should walk, for I lift up my inner self to You. Psalm 143:8 AMP

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. Proverbs 3:5–7

Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. Proverbs 3:5 AMP

When we seek to manage the affairs of our life and depend upon our own wisdom for success, without seeking God’s wisdom and grace, then we will take on burdens that God never intended for us to carry alone. We need His wisdom and guidance in all the affairs of life.

Many things in life will bring to us anxiety and danger and loss, for this is certain in this world of sin. However when we really believe that God loves us and desires to do us good, our fears shall be swallowed up by trust in Him and then we will cease to worry about the future. It is only as we learn to trust God as a child trusts a loving parent that our troubles and perplexities will disappear.

God keeps those that trust in Him from those that come against them:

Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them. Psalm 17:7

Consider my enemies, for they abound; they hate me with cruel hatred. O keep me, Lord, and deliver me; let me not be ashamed or disappointed, for my trust and my refuge are in You. Psalm 25:19, 20 AMP

Trust God in adversity:

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. Psalm 56:3, 4

What time I am afraid, I will have confidence in and put my trust and reliance in You. By [the help of] God I will praise His word; On God I lean, rely, and confidently put my trust; I will not fear. What can man, who is flesh, do to me? Psalm 56:3, 4 AMP

To wait patiently, and to trust God when everything looks hopeless and discouraging, is the lesson that each one of us needs to learn. He will not fail us in the day of adversity. Though we may feel helpless, yet it is when we feel our nothingness and rely wholly on God that we can be helped.

The reason why professed Christians have no greater strength is that they trust so much to their own wisdom, and do not give the Lord an opportunity to reveal His power in their behalf. He will help His believing children in every emergency if they will place their entire confidence in Him and faithfully obey him.

Trust in God superior to trust in might:

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright. Psalm 20:7, 8

Experience builds trust:

And they that know thy name [who have experience and acquaintance with Your mercy] will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee. Psalm 9:10

It is not freedom from trials, but in the midst of it, that Christian character is developed. Exposure to disapointment and opposition leads the follower of Christ to greater watchfulness and more earnest prayer to the mighty Helper. Severe trial endured by the grace of God develops patience, vigilance, fortitude, and a deep and abiding trust in God.

Trust in God removes darkness:

Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God. Isaiah 50:10

There are many who become restless when they cannot know the definite outcome of what is before them. They cannot endure uncertainty, and in their impatience they refuse to wait on and trust in God. Anticipated problems and evils so upset them, that it leaves them unable to think clearly or act sensibly. They give way to their feelings of worry and distrust, when if they would trust in God, and watch unto prayer, they would know and experience peace and assurance.

Jesus said, “All things are possible to him that believeth” (Mark 9:23).“And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive” (Matthew 21:22). It is the absence of this faith and trust in God that brings perplexity, fear, and evil surmising. God will do great things for His people when they put their entire trust in Him.

Happiness and rejoicing come with trusting in God:

But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. Psalm 5:11

But let all those who take refuge and put their trust in You rejoice; let them ever sing and shout for joy, because You make a covering over them and defend them; let those also who love Your name be joyful in You and be in high spirits. Psalm 5:11 AMP

The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him. Psalm 28:7

The Lord alone our confidence and trust:

Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.… I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:5, 8

Offer just and right sacrifices; trust (lean on and be confident) in the Lord.…In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for You, Lord, alone make me dwell in safety and confident trust. Psalm 4:5, 8 AMP

Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. Psalm 33:20, 21

Our inner selves wait [earnestly] for the Lord; He is our Help and our Shield. For in Him does our heart rejoice, because we have trusted (relied on and been confident) in His holy name. Psalm 33:20, 21 AMP

A life in Christ is a life of restfulness. There need not be a feeling of ecstasy, but we should be filled with an abiding, peaceful trust. Our hope is not in ourselves; it is in Christ. Our weakness is united to His strength, our ignorance to His wisdom, our frailty to His enduring might.

Jesus is able to bear our burdens but only as we trust Him. For He says to us, “Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Jesus says to us, “give Me your load; trust Me to do the work that it is impossible for you to do.”

Let us therefore trust Him, for if we fall into doubt and worry it is blind and cannot discern the future. However Jesus sees the end from the beginning, and in every difficulty we face He has His way prepared to bring relief. Let us remember, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13).

A trust that cannot be shaken:

Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him. Job 13:15

They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever. Psalm 125:1

Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. Habakkuk 3:17, 18

The blessing of deliverance found in trusting in God:

He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him. For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses. And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not. 2 Kings 18:5–7

Blessing attends leaders who trust in God:

Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. Psalm 2:10–12

Not to trust in our own righteousness:

When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it. Ezekiel 33:13

And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. Luke 18:9–14

Not to trust in self:

He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. Proverbs 28:26

Not to trust in riches and works:

He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch. Proverbs 11:28

They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him. Psalm 49:6, 7

For because thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures, thou shalt also be taken: and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity with his priests and his princes together. And the spoiler shall come upon every city, and no city shall escape: the valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed, as the LORD hath spoken. Jeremiah 48:7, 8

Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually. God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah. Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness. But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever. Psalm 52:1, 5, 7, 8

Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy. 1 Timothy 6:17

And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! Mark 10:24

Jesus said to them again, Children, how hard it is for those who trust (place their confidence, their sense of safety) in riches to enter the kingdom of God. Mark 10:24 AMP

If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence; If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much; This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above. Job 31:24, 25, 28

The futile hope and trust of the godless:

Can the rush grow up without mire? can the flag grow without water? Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down, it withereth before any other herb. So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite’s hope shall perish: Whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust shall be a spider's web. Job 8:11–14

The wicked man suffers with [self-inflicted] torment all his days, through all the years that are numbered and laid up for him the oppressor. Because he has stretched out his hand against God and bids defiance and behaves himself proudly against the Almighty,…He shall not depart out of darkness [and escape from calamity; the wrath of God] shall consume him as flame consumes a dry tree, and by the blast of His mouth he shall be swept away. Let him not deceive himself and trust in vanity (emptiness, falseness, and futility), for these shall be his recompense [for such living]. Job 15:20, 25, 30, 31 AMP

Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon: Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant. Isaiah 30:12, 13

Therefore thus says the holy one of Israel: Because you despise and spurn this [My] word and trust in cunning and oppression, in crookedness and perverseness, and rely on them. Therefore this iniquity and guilt will be to you like a broken section of a high wall, bulging out and ready [at some distant day] to fall, whose crash will [then] come suddenly and swiftly, in an instant. Isaiah 30:12, 13, AMP

For thou [Babylon] hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me. Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know. Isaiah 47:10, 11

False trust:

And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fenced walls come down, wherein thou trustedst, throughout all thy land: and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the LORD thy God hath given thee. Deuteronomy 28:52

To me belongeth vengeance and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste. For the LORD shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants, when he seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left. And he shall say, Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted. Deuteronomy 32:35–37

Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, are these. Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit. Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not; And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations? Jeremiah 7:4, 8–10

Trust not in the lying words [of the false prophet who maintain that God will protect Jerusalem because His temple is there], saying, This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord. Behold, you trust in lying words that cannot benefit [so that you do not profit]. Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known, And [then dare to] come and stand before Me in this house, which is called by My Name, and say, [By the discharge of this religious formality] we are set free!—only to go on with this wickedness and these abominations? Jeremiah 7:4, 8–10 AMP

Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin: That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt! Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion. Isaiah 30:1–3

Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD! Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the LORD shall stretch out his hand, both he that helpeth shall fall, and he that is holpen shall fall down, and they all shall fail together. Isaiah 31:1, 3

For because thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures, thou shalt also be taken: and Chemosh [your god] shall go forth into captivity with his priests and his princes together. Jeremiah 48:7

For you trusted in your wealth and skill; therefore you shall perish. Jeremiah 48:7 TLB

Moab, you trusted in your strength and wealth, but now even you will be conquered. Jeremiah 48:7 TEV

The unrighteous shall perish, but the righteous who trust in God will be delivered:

For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee. But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works. Psalm 73:27, 28

I will expose your [pretended] righteousness and your doings, but they will not help you. When you cry out, let your [rabble] collection of idols deliver you! But the wind shall take them all, a breath shall carry them away. But he who takes refuge in Me shall possess the land [Judea] and shall inherit My holy mountain [Zion, also the heavenly inheritence and the spiritual Zion]. Isaiah 57:12, 13 AMP

Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD. For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. Jeremiah 17:5–8

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. Proverbs 3:5–7
