LESSON 28 A GOOD WORK


God’s desire and purpose towards us:
 
• God is for us

He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Romans 8:32

• God’s thoughts or attitude towards us is one of peace

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Jeremiah 29:11

• God sent Jesus not to condemn but to save

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. John 3:17

• God’s desire and purpose is that all would be saved

Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:4

• God’s invitation is to all who will choose to come

And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. Revelation 22:17

1. Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6

Confident—To assent (to evidence or authority) to rely.

Perform—To fulfill further (or completely) i.e. execute. Marginal reading will finish it.

The good work:

Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Hebrews 13:21

2. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2

Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection]. Hebrews 12:2 AMP

3. And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him. Hebrews 5:9

4. But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil. 2 Thessalonians 3:3
Stablish—To set fast, i.e. literally to turn resolutely in a certain direction.

Keep—Through the idea of isolation, to watch, i.e. be on guard (literal or figurative) by implication, to preserve, obey avoid.

5. Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work. 2 Thessalonians 2:16, 17

6. Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power. 2 Thessalonians 1:11

We ask our God to make you worthy of the life he has called you to live. May he fulfill by his power all your desire for goodness and complete your work of faith. 2 Thessalonians 1:11 TEV

7. Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. Titus 2:14

God authors, begins and finishes the good work:

Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Hebrews 13:20, 21

9. Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Corinthians 6:9–11

10. Now we exhort you, brethren, 1) warn them that are unruly, 2) comfort the feebleminded, 3) support the weak, 4) be patient toward all men. 5) See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but 6) ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. 7) Rejoice evermore. 8) Pray without ceasing. 9) In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 10) Quench not the Spirit. 11) Despise not prophesyings. 12) Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. 13) Abstain from all appearance of evil. 14) And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. 1 Thessalonians 5:14–24

11. And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you: To the end [purpose or result] he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints. 1 Thessalonians 3:12, 13

So that He may strengthen and confirm and establish your hearts faultlessly pure and unblamable in holiness in the sight of our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) with all His saints (the holy and glorified people of God)! Amen, (so be it)! 1 Thessalonians 3:13 AMP

12. Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned. Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck. 1 Timothy 1:5, 19

End—Goal, purpose, conclusion, result

Commandment—To transmit a message, to enjoin a mandate. “The object and purpose of our instruction.” AMP

Pure—Clean

Heart— The thoughts or feelings (mind)

Conscience—Co-perception, i.e. moral consciousness. From to see completely

Faith unfeigned—Sincere faith, undisguised faith, faith without hypocrisy

13. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

14. That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:10–14

[We pray] that you may be invigorated and strengthened with all power according to the might of His glory, [to exercise] every kind of endurance and patience (perseverance and forbearance) with joy. Giving thanks to the Father, Who has qualified and made us fit to share the portion which is the inheritance of the saints (God’s holy people) in the Light. [The Father] has delivered and drawn us to Himself out of the control and the dominion of darkness and has transferred us into the kingdom of the Son of His love. Colossians 1:11–13 AMP
